Well first of all, USA was built on immigrants. You have nothing to feel different for. I can relate to your story from moving at the age of 26. Although I didn't move to different countries, I moved from the east coast to the west coast. I sure felt like you did. I like the point you made about being told we can do everything, to being Gods Child, to being discouraged from doing it as we get older.

Very nice! Love a newspaper article that can effortlessly weave vibrant writing with salty descriptions such as "odd douchebag."

Davis,

Strangely, considering how much shit I often gave you, I really, really miss your point-of-view and writing at the Mercury, am glad and not all surprised that you've done well in NO, and enjoy reading about your exploits there. You needed to get out of Portland---New Orleans and its culture, and wealth of things to write about that have nothing to do with the ever increasing homogeneous culture here is a much better fit for your talents.

Plotting to do the same---had considered moving to NO when my wife and I came back from a long spell abroad, but moved here instead. Regret it. Been good in some ways, but many of the negative attributes of the place that irked you annoy me as well..

A little surprised that you've traded in your passport. Not in a bad way----just wouldn't have imagined you doing it for some reason.

Anyway---take care,

Jake

I did Julie and Julia on a cross country trip the other year. It was well paced and the content wasn't so deep as to make it hard to listen to while driving. I'd call it a good choice.

I'm guessing you're not as charmed by British narrators as I am (and as most USians are), but let's say you WERE going for a long drive (with someone staying in your house to keep it safe, of course, while you're gone), then I'd recommendJonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, and the Bartimaeus trilogy (starting with this one) by Jonathan Stroud. In my experience with audiobooks, literary books like the Murakami are not the best for long drives (or long walks, or workouts).

I tried to listen to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, got to the second violent rape scene and kicked the audiobook to the curb. (I could maybe *read* the books, but listening was a little too intense.)

I wish I could loan you some of my audiobooks the way I can loan e-books! Damn you, DRM.

Hmmm... seems we're having parallel track experiences. Just saw Midnite in Paris, just played Billy Joel's 'New York State of Mind' while making dinner, and just spent the 3-day weekend thinking and preparing for my next big career move. In my 40's. It boils down to a choice between feeling painfully lame while trying or feeling like a utter failure for not trying at all.

Anyways, welcome back home:)
