Portland as “Neverland,” live chat at the Oregonian

I’ll be joining journalist Nancy Rommelmann and twenty-something Kate Williams at noon, Pacific Time, on Monday for a webchat at Oregonlive. The subject: Is Portland the new Neverland? You should tune in and hurl abuse.

It’s especially ironic that the debate will be taking place four days after the FBI captured a supposed terrorist in Portland, one whom they nurtured and even gave bomb-making equipment to. Get over yourself, Rose City. Real terrorists bomb real cities, whereas half-assed, over-hyped terrorists…

Rommelmann’s article makes reference to the piece posted by Robin Marantz Henig in a recent New York Times Sunday Magazine article, “What Is It About 20-Somethings?”

Rommelmann interviews a variety of 20-something Portlanders (I’m 31, now, but the place sapped the last four years of my twenties) about their feelings on life in the Rose City, including one lady who wants to open a “community yoga center-slash-teahouse.”

I’m in the mix, too. Recounting the same old lines.

Good riddance, Matt. Is a real city defined by real-size dysfunction and decay? Enjoy New Orleans.

I live in Portland and would like to apologize for sapping the last 4 years of your twenties. I’m really sorry. I had no idea I was even doing that.

I admire the guy with the bike repair shop. But the others–how do you pay off your college loans by hosting art nights?
I’ve been a career free-lancer, working in a “creative” field, and I’ve never had any illusions about it. But some of these people seem to think that there’s an eccentric millionaire roaming the land, handing out cash.

How long ago did you leave Portland? Nice to see you’ve gotten over it. Did someone hand-cuff you to a bike rack or something? Why didn’t you just leave like a rational adult? I’ve lived in some places I didn’t like very much, but not for very long.

I miss this terribly. Thank you very much for the “tattooing itself to death” line.
